A community built on trust, honesty, and tea.

Vibrant Health Advocates - Alpha is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Edinburgh. We believe understanding your own health is a right, not a privilege — and that no one should face the complexity of a chronic condition without someone in their corner.

Standing alongside people as they navigate systems not always designed with them in mind.

Vibrant Health Advocates - Alpha is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Edinburgh. We work specifically with older adults — people in their sixties, seventies, eighties and beyond — who are living with one or more long-term health conditions and who, too often, are doing so without adequate support around them. Our name reflects something we genuinely believe: that health is not merely the absence of illness, and that advocacy means standing alongside people as they navigate systems that were not always designed with them in mind.

We operate across Edinburgh's diverse inner-city and residential neighbourhoods, with particular roots in areas where tenement living means neighbours can be separated by a single stairwell yet rarely speak. Loneliness and social isolation have well-documented effects on the management of chronic conditions — they worsen outcomes, increase hospital admissions, and erode the confidence people need to self-manage effectively. Our work directly addresses those effects, not by offering clinical services, but by offering community.

As a SCIO, every decision we make is governed by our charitable purpose and the people we serve. Our trustees bring together expertise in public health, social care, lived experience of long-term illness, and community development in Edinburgh. We are funded through a combination of grants from the National Lottery Community Fund, Edinburgh Integration Joint Board, and generous individual donors. We publish full accounts and a trustees' annual report each year, and we welcome scrutiny — because transparency is part of what it means to be trustworthy.

Out and about in Edinburgh

From a kitchen table to eight Edinburgh neighbourhoods.

Vibrant Health Advocates - Alpha grew out of a conversation in 2018 between a retired community nurse and a group of older women she had come to know through a local diabetes clinic in Leith. The nurse, having spent decades watching patients leave appointments clutching leaflets they could barely read and phone numbers they were too anxious to call, began hosting informal tea mornings so that people could talk through what they had been told.

Word spread quickly. Men who had never set foot in a support group came because it was described as a chat over a biscuit. Carers came because they were as lost as the people they supported. Within a year, what had begun around a kitchen table had outgrown three different venues.

Registering as a SCIO in 2020 gave the organisation a formal footing, but it never lost the quality that made people come in the first place: the sense that everyone in the room was being treated as a capable adult who simply needed better information and better company. Today we run sessions in eight Edinburgh neighbourhoods, employ a small staff team, and work with over sixty trained volunteers. We remain proudly local — rooted in the specific geography, dialect, and community fabric of this city.

The people who guide our work

Vibrant Health Advocates - Alpha is governed by a board of trustees who give their time voluntarily and bring a breadth of professional and personal experience to our work. Our trustees hold us to account, set our strategic direction, and ensure that our charitable purpose remains at the heart of every decision. Alongside the board, a small staff team — led by our Development Manager — coordinates our programmes, supports our volunteers, and maintains the relationships with health and social care partners that make our work possible. We are enormously proud of the people who make this organisation what it is.
